Pyramid Solitaire Variants: Classic, Relaxed & Timer Modes

The original rule set. You get one or two recycles of the waste pile (two or three total passes through the stock, depending on the implementation). Pairs that sum to 13 are removed; Kings leave alone. You win by clearing all 28 pyramid cards.

Classic Pyramid has a relatively low theoretical win rate — around 1 in 50 deals is winnable with optimal play, depending on the exact recycle count allowed. Many implementations improve this significantly by allowing more recycles or adjusting the pyramid layout.

Relaxed mode allows unlimited recycles through the stock. This dramatically increases the win rate — most deals become theoretically winnable with enough passes. The challenge shifts from ‘can I win’ to ‘can I win efficiently’ (with a good score or low cycle count).

Relaxed mode is ideal for players learning the game, since it removes the pressure of limited stock passes and lets you focus on the pairing logic and pyramid unblocking strategies without losing to a missed recycle opportunity.

Timer mode adds a countdown clock, typically 10 to 15 minutes. The goal is clearing as many pyramid cards as possible before time runs out, with scoring bonuses for clearing the full pyramid. Efficient play — minimizing unnecessary draws, taking direct pairs immediately, unblocking the pyramid top first — becomes critical.

Timer mode rewards players who have already learned the strategic principles of Classic Pyramid. It’s a poor teaching mode (the clock pressure discourages careful thinking) but an excellent test of whether those principles have become instinct.

Basic scoring: 5 points per pyramid card removed, 100 bonus for clearing the full pyramid. Some versions add streak bonuses for removing multiple pyramid cards in a row without drawing from stock. Others add time bonuses in timer mode, or multiply points by recycle count efficiency (fewer recycles = higher multiplier).

Understanding the scoring system in your specific version tells you which behaviors to optimize. If streak bonuses exist, prioritize chains of direct pyramid pairs before drawing. If recycle efficiency is scored, work harder to solve with fewer stock passes.
