How to Beat Pyramid Solitaire More Often

Pyramid Solitaire can feel like pure luck, but play order matters more than most players realize. These strategies won't make every deal winnable, but they'll meaningfully improve your results.

Clear the Top Rows First — Carefully

The pyramid's tip is the biggest blocker. Removing the top card opens access to two cards in row 2, which each open two more in row 3, and so on. Prioritize clearing upper rows to expand the number of free cards available. But don't clear upper cards if doing so removes a card you'll need as a partner later — check what pairs those cards form before removing them.

Conserve Kings

Kings can be removed alone at any time, which makes them feel like freebies. But a King sitting in the pyramid is blocking two row-6 cards and potentially four row-7 cards. Don't rush to remove a King if the cards beneath it aren't useful yet — plan the removal to coincide with needing access to those lower rows.

Track Which Pairs Are Still Available

If both 6s are buried deep in the pyramid under unavailable cards, your 7s are essentially useless until those 6s are uncovered. Mentally (or physically) note which pairing ranks are depleted or blocked. A 3 on the tableau with no accessible 10s is dead weight.

Use the Stock Strategically, Not Reflexively

Don't cycle through the stock just because you can't see an immediate move. Count the free cards in the pyramid carefully — sometimes a pair is available that you missed. Burning stock cycles unnecessarily reduces your options in the end game when you need specific cards to appear from the waste pile.

Recognize Dead Positions Early

The most common dead position: two paired cards (e.g. a 4 and a 9) are both buried deep in the pyramid under cards that require the other to be cleared first. This creates a blocking loop that no amount of stock cycling can resolve. Learning to spot this pattern early — rather than grinding to the inevitable loss — will save you time and frustration.
