How to Read Mahjong Tiles Quickly

Circles (also called Dots or Wheels): Each tile shows a pattern of circular dots, from one dot (the 1-Circle) to nine dots (the 9-Circle). The 1-Circle often features a decorative design rather than a plain dot in stylized sets. Look for circular shapes arranged in a grid pattern.

Bamboo (also called Sticks or Bams): Each tile shows bamboo stalks stacked vertically, from one stalk to nine stalks. The 1-Bamboo is a special case — it typically shows a bird (sometimes a peacock or crane) rather than a single bamboo stalk. If you see a bird tile with bamboo context, that’s your 1-Bamboo.

Characters (also called Wan or Man): Each tile shows a large Chinese numeral at the top with a smaller character (the character for “ten-thousand” or “man”) at the bottom. You don’t need to read Chinese to use these tiles — just count the number of distinct strokes in the top character, which correspond to 1 through 9.

Winds (East, South, West, North): Four tiles, one for each cardinal direction, each showing the corresponding Chinese character. There are four identical copies of each wind — so four East tiles, four South tiles, and so on. Matching is straightforward: two East tiles match, two South tiles match, etc.

Dragons (Red, Green, White): Three types, four copies each. The Red Dragon shows the Chinese character for ‘center’ in red. The Green Dragon shows the character for ‘prosperity’ in green. The White Dragon is typically a blank tile or shows an outlined rectangle — the ‘nothing’ dragon.

Flowers (four tiles, one copy each): Each flower tile has a unique design — typically labeled 1 through 4 with a floral image. Unlike other tiles, all four flower tiles match each other. You don’t need to find a pair of identical flowers; any flower matches any other flower.

Seasons (four tiles, one copy each): Similarly, each season tile has a unique design representing spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Any season tile matches any other season tile.

Flowers and Seasons are easy to spot because they’re typically more ornate or colorful than the suited and honor tiles. When you see two unusually decorative tiles, check whether they’re both flowers or both seasons — if so, they match.

For Circles: count dots. For Bamboo: count stalks (or spot the bird for 1-Bamboo). For Characters: look at the top numeral character. For Winds and Dragons: learn the four wind characters and three dragon appearances as a short vocabulary — you only need to recognize 7 distinct symbols.

The Flower and Season tiles are the easiest to match once you know they work as a group. Prioritize matching them whenever they’re both free — they’re guaranteed pairs that never form blocking dependencies.
